Many people question why we observe daylight savings time. During World War I, daylight savings time (DST) was established for energy-saving purposes by the Germans. Shortly after the Germans created DST, the Americans adopted the idea as well. The creation was meant to shift work hours to align more consistently with daylight. Later on in the 1970s, America tried to establish a permanent daylight savings time due to the 1974 energy crisis. However, this permanency received much backlash because children would primarily have to commute to school in complete darkness. There is a lot of debate whether DST is still efficient nowadays since modern energy usage doesn’t have the same restrictions that technology had back in the 1900s. Donald Trump expressed support for creating a new permanence for DST, but no further legislation has been proposed to do so. To keep a long story short, the DST cycle will continue indefinitely until America decides that it is no longer necessary.
