National Snowplow Mailbox Hockey Day is celebrated every year on January 23. This sport is relatively uncommon and only a competition today. It involves, as you might have guessed, a snowplow and mailboxes. The first Snowplow Mailbox Hockey Day was in 2010, created to humorously recognize the greatest casualty of plowing snow: mailboxes. The object of the game is to, with your snowplow, hit as many mailboxes as possible within the day. You receive five points for knocking one down and twenty for sending it across the street, and the winner receives a small prize. This quirky game comes into play mostly in the North, where the snow actually reaches the height of the mailboxes, making it a lot easier to accidentally hit them. Many cities get very invested on this day, forming teams and bringing in former drivers as referees. Instead of getting mad at the snowplows, people can laugh and give points, making the snowplow drivers feel valued and thanked. Â
