On October 30th, 150 BJA juniors and seniors were given the opportunity to attend a wide variety of college classes at BJU, what many consider to be the highlight of their Bruins Days experience. The most popular fields were Health (22%) and Business (23%) for senior students and Engineering (12%), Health (15%), and Business (21%) among juniors. Additionally, 46 seniors are currently interested in or planning to attend BJU next year.
The Triangle interviewed some juniors about their College for a Day experience.
“My College for a Day experience was amazing! I attended classes in Criminal Justice and Political Science, which really helped me clarify what I want to pursue as a career. The professors were engaging, and the material made me even more excited about attending college. I also loved not having to wear uniforms—it gave me a sense of what everyday college life will be like.” – Abbie Stark
“I thoroughly enjoyed my College for a Day experience! I took a Documentary Production Seminar and an Advanced Acting class. I found both to be fascinating, but I loved Advanced Acting more. Everyone was so kind and welcoming. Although these classes had nothing to do with the major I picked, they were definitely topics I was interested in, and they gave me some clarity. I had a great day, and I am looking forward to pursuing my future!” – Jada Webb
Our own members also chimed in with their thoughts.
“Bruins Days were so fun; several of my friends visited my dual credit General Psychology class in the morning, and in the afternoon I attended a General Biology Lab. I got to help one of the students calculate molarity and make a salt solution (and I may have contaminated a bottle of pure water – by accident). I appreciated the opportunity to see what a typical class in my major would look like, and it was interesting to note how my education at the Academy prepared me to understand a good bit of the lab. My free boba at Boba Jones was amazing, too!” – Shannah Lin
“I had a lot of fun during Bruins Days! The major I selected was Culinary Arts, and I was disappointed that they didn’t have any Culinary classes available to attend. I decided to just select classes that looked interesting so I chose British Romantic Literature and Intro to Public Health. Both classes were interesting, but I really enjoyed Intro to Public Health. Something I would suggest for next year is allowing seniors to skip the tour since the majority did it the year before, and letting them attend a 3rd class. I felt like 2 classes weren’t very many. I’m looking forward to College for a Day next year!” – Karis Bumgardner
“I had a great time at Bruins Days this year, and I am grateful for the opportunity that we had to tour the college. The tour I attended was a mixed group of students interested in science and technology, so our first stop was obviously the science building. In the science building, we were immediately met with a large display of taxidermied birds in a large display case that stretched the entire hallway. One of our tour guides also told us about the cadaver room with two cadavers, one male and one female, from Furman University that they were allowed to use. Sadly, the cadaver room was not part of our tour, and we made our way to the engineering building where our guides showed us the self-driving car the engineering students were working on. Overall, Bruins Days was a great experience, and I am excited to visit new classes next year.” – Annsley Kirkwood
