As time passes on, trends in fashion are ever changing. Here’s a look into some of the reasons behind the modern day trends found here at our school. Whether it’s Stanleys, lululemon™, or Jordans, there’s always a reason behind the trend.
One of the first reasons for an item’s popularity is quality. Stanleys, for example, had a very noticeable surge in popularity when the famous story of the Stanley that survived a car fire came to light. After the rise of Stanleys, Owalas have started to see their way into that same spotlight. Providing an effective, durable lid and good thermal insulation at an inexpensive price has brought the water bottles into the backpacks of many students today.
Another common reason can be linked to our athletics programs: utility. You can see many people today walking around with massive water bottles or wearing athletic shoes because these are items they may already be using for athletics. Coaches ask their players to drink large amounts of water, so players might as well carry a large water bottle. In a similar vein, basketball and volleyball players need to wear rubber-soled shoes in order to play on the courts, so they might as well wear them as their regular shoes and spare the expense of a second pair.
The final reason for an item’s popularity is also the most obvious one: aesthetics. Aesthetics are an undeniable factor when it comes to our decisions in what we buy and wear. Are there better tote bags to use than a lululemon™ bag? Undoubtedly so, but the brand is the reason people are willing to choose that bag over other alternatives. This principle can be applied almost universally, whether it’s shoes, water bottles, backpacks, jackets, or any other fashion piece you can think of.
No matter the reason, fashion trends come and go; it’s only a matter of time. And trends that disappear today are likely to reemerge in the future, probably when our children are teens (just look at the 80s comeback).
